Are your old tires worn out and balding? If so, don’t wait any longer to purchase new tires. Many vehicle owners are often confused when trying to make a decision as to what kind of tire they should purchase. There are so many different brands and prices, not to mention other specifications. Because it’s such a big investment in your vehicle, you don’t want to make the wrong decision.

So how often should you get new tires on your car? Tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires about every six years, the time when most warranties expire. At the longest, don’t drive on tires for more than 10 years, regardless of how much tread may remain.

Before making a decision as to what kind of tire to purchase, do some research on the various types and specifications of the tires that would fit your vehicle. Here are few factors to consider:

  • What is the purpose of the tires (all-weather, snow, off-road)?
  • What is the average number of miles you drive each year?
  • What kind of road do you typically drive on (gravel, smooth pavement, filled with potholes)?
  • Do you consistently drive in extreme temperatures, such as very hot or very cold?
  • Do you know how to store tires when not in use? For example, changing from all-weather tires to snow tires.

So that your new tires will last you as long as possible and allows the tread to wear as evenly as possible, here are some tips for taking care of your tires:

  • Check inflation pressure about every 3,000 miles. It affects how your vehicle grips the road, accelerates, comes to a stop, and uses fuel.
  • Rotate tires about every 6,000 miles, or at every other oil change.
  • Check wheel alignment frequently and have adjusted so that your tires are going straight down the road in the same direction.
  • Check the rubber and sidewalls for any cuts or tears and have repaired as needed.
  • Prevent excessive pressure on your tires by not overloading your vehicle.
