If you keep your car long enough, it is inevitable that a tune up will be needed at some point in time to keep it performing well. Considered as basic preventive maintenance, a car tune up helps maintain your vehicle’s power and performance, giving you many more miles of reliable service.

So just how often should you get a tune up on your car? You will notice in your owner’s manual that there is a recommended time frame listed. But, if you are starting to notice that your vehicle is losing its power and performance capabilities, schedule a car diagnostics. Your mechanic will then be able to pinpoint any pending problems in the operating systems, engine, transmission, oil and gas tanks, and exhaust system.

Here are some of the problems that may become obvious when it’s time for a tune up:

  • Check engine light comes on while driving.
  • Engine idles rough or stalls when you accelerate or a brake.
  • Less miles per gallon which means that you are spending more at the pump.
  • Shifting problems, such as slipping, jerking, or hard to put into gear.
  • Feel unusual vibrations in the steering wheel or seat.

For older cars with non-electric ignition systems, the typically recommended tune up interval is about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. At this time, spark plugs, filters, and fluids will all be replaced. For today’s newer vehicles that are equipped with electronic ignitions and fuel injectors, computer processors, and sensors, it’s a little harder to specify when it’s time for a tune up. They can go anywhere from 25,000 up to 100,000 miles before needing a tune up. This is why it’s a good idea to have a car diagnostics so you can know what’s going on under the hood!
