Even though you think you have a reliable vehicle, there may come a time that all of a sudden you see the “Service Engine” light illuminate on the instrument panel. Don’t take it lightly! This could be the first warning sign of potential engine problems.

So what causes the “Service Engine” light to come on, you wonder? Take note of the following issues:

  1. Gas Cap – If the gas cap is loose or cracked, fuel vapors leak out and can throw the whole fuel system off, reducing gas mileage and increasing toxic emissions. Try re-tightening the cap and then drive a few miles to see if the warning light goes off.
  2. Bad Oxygen Sensor – The oxygen sensor monitors the unburned oxygen from the exhaust and how much fuel is burned. If this sensor is going bad, it cannot send the right data to the car’s computer.
  3. Failing Catalytic Converter – A failing catalytic converter is unable to convert carbon monoxide and other harmful fumes into harmless emissions.
  4. Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor – If the mass airflow sensor becomes clogged, it cannot do its job of telling the car's computer how much fuel to add based on the air coming through to the engine.
  5. Dirty Spark Plugs and Wires – You will start to experience starting problems if the spark plugs fail, as they are unable to spark and initiate combustion in your engine.

The problems above will generally result in reduced gas mileage, an increase in toxic fumes emitted from your car, and a car that is hard to start. Head to your auto shop and ask for a diagnostic test, Your mechanic can pinpoint a potential problem and take care of it before it turns into a major engine repair.

Do you want to know how to prevent a major engine repair? Take care of all the recommended engine service items listed in your vehicle’s service manual.
