Toledo Auto Care

4544 Monroe St
Toledo, OH 43613

After surviving the freezing temperatures of winter, your vehicle may be a little noisier and more sluggish than usual. A good quality oil change may take care of that problem! Unfortunately, some drivers may not want to pay a little extra for a high-quality oil change or for a good quality filter. Just because your car is still running doesn’t mean that all is well in the engine. The damage that can be caused by inferior oil, dirty oil, or low oil may not be noticeable for quite a few miles.

So how do you know if you need your oil changed? Watch out for these signs:

  1. Dark Dirty Oil – If you can’t see the dipstick through the oil, it is too dirty.
  2. Noisy Engine – Knocking, rumbling, or roaring sounds are coming from under the hood.
  3. Oil Change Light – This warning light is an indicator of low oil in the engine. It’s okay to top off with a little more oil but schedule an oil change as soon as you can.
  4. Smoke from the Exhaust – A possible oil leak or damage in the engine can cause smoke to come from the muffler (not the usual translucent vapor).
  5. Oil Smell – A smell of oil inside the car could be an indicator of a possible oil leak. If you smell oil mixed with exhaust fumes, the engine may be overheating and oil is burning in the exhaust.

Why should you use high-quality oil? A good quality oil keeps contaminants separated, plus the better the oil, the better your engine will run. Inferior oil deposits harmful contaminants into the lubricating system, contributing to sludge build-up. Regular oil changes will drain out these contaminants along with any sludge that may be starting to build up.

Remember: Regular oil changes are the time for your mechanic to thoroughly inspect the other systems of your vehicle for any potential problems. Many shops offer oil change coupons to help make frequent oil changes more affordable for their customers.
