If you have owned a car for a very long, you may have experienced a time when you had to constantly tug at the steering wheel to correct the direction your car wanted to go. Unfortunately, it’s often hard to know the cause of the problem. Does a tire need to be balanced? Is the car out of alignment? Or is it time to purchase new tires?

Just what does it mean when a tire is “out of balance? It means that one particular spot on a tire is heavier than other sections around the rim. Neglecting a simple tire balance service when needed will eventually damage your tires, suspension system, and steering system. Not only will you be buying new tires, but you may also be faced with a major repair job!

So how often should tires be balanced? Because there is no set mileage interval, have tire balance and the wheel alignment checked about every 6,000 miles (or every other oil change). These problems can be taken care of quickly and easily at a much lower cost than having to purchase new tires or replace your shocks!

So how do you know when a tire is out of balance? You will start to notice one or more of the following signs:

  • Car drifts from side to side even when holding the steering wheel straight,
  • Every little bump and rock in the road can be felt,
  • The steering wheel vibrates more than usual, and
  • The steering wheel feels loose and hard to hold straight.

It is true that you could keep on driving, but the problems will only get worse with each mile. So head to your auto shop for an inspection of your wheels and tires. Often, it is hard to know whether there is a misalignment or a tire balance issue.

Remember: Even a simple tire out-of-balance can shorten the life of your tires by hundreds or thousands of miles while compromising the safety of your steering and suspension systems.
