If you keep your car long enough, it is inevitable that a tune up will be needed at some point in time to keep it performing well. Considered as basic preventive maintenance, a car tune up helps maintain your vehicle’s power and performance, adding many more miles of reliable service. You will notice in your owner’s manual that there is a recommended time frame listed, but your mechanic may recommend a diagnostic test to see exactly what is happening under the hood.

What does a car diagnostic test tell you, you ask? If you are starting to notice that your vehicle is losing its power and performance capabilities, a diagnostic test will help your mechanic pinpoint any pending problems in the operating systems, including the engine, transmission, exhaust system, and oil and gas tanks.

Here are some of the problems that may become obvious when it’s time for a tune up:

  • Check engine light comes on while driving.
  • Engine idles rough or stalls when you accelerate or a brake.
  • Less miles per gallon which means that you are spending more money at the pump.
  • Shifting problems, such as slipping, jerking, or hard to put into gear.
  • Feel unusual vibrations in the steering wheel or seat.

For older cars with non-electric ignition systems, a tune up should be done about every 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Typically, spark plugs, filters, and fluids will all be replaced. But for today’s newer vehicles that are equipped with electronic ignitions and fuel injectors, computer processors, and sensors, it’s a little harder to specify when it’s time for a tune up. They can go anywhere from 25,000 up to 100,000 miles before needing a tune up. A car diagnostic will tell your mechanic when it’s time for a tune up.
