You may be wondering just what is the average lifespan of a car battery? Under normal driving conditions, it only takes between three to five years for car batteries to become worn down and inefficient. A battery can be almost completely unreliable at the four-year mark.

Did you know that a car battery is similar to a cell phone battery? They both become less efficient with every charge. While driving, the alternator is constantly recharging the battery, thereby diminishing its efficiency. A weak car battery can have a negative effect on all the components of the auto electrical system, such as headlights, power windows, radio, etc.

There are several things vehicle owners can do to keep their car battery going strong:

  1. Limit Short Rides. Short rides prevent your car’s battery from fully charging. To help maintain your car’s battery power, drive it frequently and for extended periods.
  2. Keep Battery Tightly Fastened. A loose battery can vibrate, potentially resulting in internal damage and short circuits.
  3. Turn Off Lights. Forgetting to turn off your headlights and car door lights can put a heavy toll on your battery.
  4. Control Corrosion. Battery terminals corrode over time so keep them clean by scrubbing with a mixture of baking soda and water. Then, rinse the mixture off with cold water in a spray bottle and dry thoroughly with a clean cloth.
  5. Test Battery Often. Test your battery’s output voltage level to keep track of how it’s keeping a charge and if it’s time for a car battery replacement.
  6. Don’t Use Electronics While Idling. In addition to avoiding idling, turn off accessories like the radio or air conditioner when your engine isn’t running to put less wear and tear on your battery power.
  7. Take Care of Your Car. Take your car in for routine tune-ups, as well as storing it properly can help extend the lifespan of your battery.

No matter how well you maintain your car battery, they will wear out eventually. Don’t put off a needed car battery replacement so you’re not left stranded on the side of the road.
