If you have been visiting your auto shop more frequently than usual because of an urgent tire repair, your old tires may not be safe on the road! However, shopping for new tires is often overwhelming for a lot of vehicle owners. With all the different brands and types to choose from, how do you know which tire is the best for your vehicle? The thing to remember is that you really do get what you pay for when it comes to new tires. It may be tempting, but don’t end up buying the cheapest ones in the shop.

So how do you know when should you replace car tires? The typical warranty guidelines published by tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires about every six years (as that is when most warranties expire). At the very longest, don’t drive on your tires any longer than 10 years, regardless of how much tread may remain.

Before making a decision as to what kind of tire to purchase, read up on the specifications of the various types of tires. Here are some factors to also take into consideration:

  • For what purpose are you buying the tires (all-weather, snow, off-road)?
  • What is the average number of miles you drive each year?
  • What kind of road do you typically drive on (gravel, smooth pavement, filled with potholes)?
  • Do you consistently drive in extreme temperatures, such as very hot or very cold?
  • Do you know how to store tires when not in use? For example, changing from all-weather tires to snow tires.

The tire service guidelines below can help extend how many miles of service your new tires will give you:

  • Inflation pressure affects how your vehicle grips the road, acceleration, deceleration, and fuel efficiency. Check it at about every 3,000 miles.
  • To ensure even tread wear, have tires rotated about every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
  • Check wheel alignment frequently and have adjusted as needed.
  • Make sure there aren’t any cuts or tears in the rubber or sidewalls.
  • Avoid excessive pressure on your tires by not overloading your vehicle.
