About Us
Founded in 1917
Toledo Tire and Auto Care is Toledo’s oldest independent automotive repair shop. We were founded on, and continue to operate with, the goal of building relationships and trust with our customers and being transparent in everything we do. George Lee and Mack McFarland started the business as Toledo Radiator and Body Company, located at Monroe St and 11th St in downtown Toledo.
The First Move
The company moved once more before settling in our present location at 4544 Monroe St, near Secor Rd, in 1969. We closed our body shop and became Toledo Radiator and Glass that same year. Eight years later, we dropped the glass business and became Toledo Radiator. Our current owner, Gary Pontious, joined the company the following year in 1978, and he purchased the business in 1985. His son, Gary Jr., joined the company full-time in 1994 and took over the day to day operations in 2006. Together, they work hard to provide auto repair service that is based on honesty, integrity, and trust for Toledo and the surrounding areas.
Changing the Business
In 1995 we saw the need to pivot and add auto repair as part of our business, as a result of the industry changing and the radiator business slowing down. We then changed our name to Toledo Radiator and Auto Care. Fast forward to 2005 and we decided to stop doing radiator repair altogether, changing our name to Toledo Tire and Auto Care.
Our Second Store
In 2016 we made our next big move and purchased our second location on Heatherdowns Blvd to service South Toledo, Maumee, and Holland. A year later we celebrated our 100th Year Anniversary with a classic car show! We then purchased our 3rd location, B&L Auto Service, in 2019.
Further Expansion
B&L is located in Whitehouse and was started in 1948 by Willis (Bill) Bucher and Sereno LaPlante. It was later purchased by John Pollock and his son, Mike, in 1979. Mike and his wife, Jeanne, took over the business from his dad in the mid-1980s. They owned and operated it until we purchased it, which allowed us to service Whitehouse, Waterville, Swanton, and Monclova.
A New Logo
In 2023 we see the industry changing once again with the move to electric vehicles. This year we have begun to pivot again and have added tire replacement and service as a main part of our business. We have now changed our name to Toledo Tire and Auto Care.
